Ad Astra

I love science fiction.  And over the years, a number of movies have won my admiration for their message as much as their technical prowess.  Some may seem laughable by today’s standards, but they were magnificent when they debuted.  These movies are on my must-see list:

  • The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
  • This Island Earth (1955)
  • Forbidden Planet (1956)
  • Fantastic Voyage (1966)
  • 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
  • Solaris (1972)
  • Dark Star (1974)
  • Star Wars (1977)
  • Outland (1981)
  • Blade Runner (1982)
  • E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
  • Tron (1982)
  • 2010 (1984)
  • Event Horizon (1997)
  • Soldier (1998)
  • Pitch Black (2000)
  • Moon (2009)

And recommended more for their tongue in cheek pokes at the genre:

  • Demolition Man (1993)
  • The Fifth Element (1997)
  • Galaxy Quest (1999)
  • Space Cowboys (2000)

You probably think that some of these are the worst movies ever made, and they may not appeal to you.  I make no claims to anything other than liking to watch them when I can.

Note: Movies in Italics were earlier omissions.
